Michigan Governor OKs Abortion Ultrasound Law

It's not a big step, but it's still a step in a better direction.
Is it mandatory in any state to have an ultrasound directly prior to an abortion?
Until now, Michigan law has
required that women have a chance to review diagrams and descriptions showing a
developing fetus, but not their own.
The new law allows, but does not
require, clinics to do an ultrasound exam.

It is a good step, it makes me wonder why these ultrasound pictures aren't apart of sex education in public schools

I never thought of that, but I bet that would definately have a impact on women's decisions to abort their babies. So many people don't see or understand that even at such an early point in pregnancy, that these are real little babies. I know, for me, the ultrasounds definately made my pregnancies seem more real.

I completely agree with you, Renee. I think pictures like these would make the pregnancy/sex ed. program seem so much more "concrete" to these kids.

Heck, even *I* was surprised to physically see my baby that I miscarried. 11 weeks gestation- and I had NO clue just how developed babies truly are at that point. Not even from the ultrasound. It is so amazing. We can read about it and see pictures in books, but when we see our own babies, it's just more real and different.

Same with me, Kim! And I found it to be especially beneficial to my husband. They don't have all the physical changes to experience the pregnancy, but the ultrasounds and listening to the heartbeat make it so "real" for them.
