American Idol anti-woman?

I don't think so! All of a sudden it's not going someone else's way, so we label it anti-.....? That's not how it works. Let's not forget that the viewers call in to vote!

I chuckled as I read this editorial:
The backlash against American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee in the wake of contestant Chris Daughtry's elimination from the show, as reported in USA TODAY ("Chris' exit stuns fans of 'Idol'," Life, May 12), is yet another example of how the show's fifth season has inexplicably turned increasingly anti-women.

McPhee, who will compete next week against contestant Taylor Hicks, is arguably the most talented contestant this year, and industry legends David Foster and Tommy Mottola alluded to that during their guest appearances on the show. Nonetheless, resident judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and, to a lesser extent, Simon Cowell, have sought to undermine her confidence.

Now, it appears that viewers have jumped on the anti-McPhee bandwagon, demonstrating that the show isn't really about crowning the best undiscovered raw talent but more about favorites and demographics.

For those of us who still believe in the time-honored tradition of "may the best person win," let's hope Katharine McPhee is the next "Idol".

Arguably the most talented contestant this year? Yes, she is talented, but she has an immature presence about her, and her tendency to resent criticism and talk back to the judges only confirms that. Stage presence has a lot to do with performing, and her immaturity really hurts her. (along with her cocky attitude and over-confidence. NEVER act that shocked about being in the bottom three!)

OK, I promise to lay off the AI posts for a bit! :) (or at least til Thursday...lol)

I think I am one of the few people who like KM. I think she is amazingly talented and don't find her cocky. In fact, I think last week especially, Paula and Randy's criticisms were too harsh and I respected the fact that Katherine stood up for herself. The fact that Simon praised her after Paula and Randy criticized her confirmed to me that they were too harsh. And their criticisms didn't even make sense to me; they actually babbled, and then said it was song choice, when she didn't even pick the song! I am fully convinced that Paula and Randy just don't like her, like many people out there don't, and it's about Taylor and Elliot being likable. Elliot's first performance was way under par compared to Katherine's and they praised him more than her first performance. I think that just because she may not be as likeable as Taylor or Elliot doesn't mean she should be overly criticized. I think many have lost their objectivity over her talent, because that rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow was INCREDIBLE! Yes, Chris was the MOST talented, IMO, but I think KM is much more talented than Taylor and Elliot and should win at this point. But she won't because people don't like her. And why is it that when Chris was shocked that he was out, no one accuses him of being cocky, but they do when KM is surprised? It's a double standard, and people read her as being cocky or arrogant, but have no proof that she is either.

I personally find Taylor grating and didn't think Elliot had much charisma. However, Taylor will win no matter how he does because everyone likes him, which is fine because he probably needs it more than the others. Chris will be famous for sure, and Katherine might be as well (I personally think she'd be great on broadway), but Taylor wouldn't be able to get a record deal without AI because of his appearance (which is sad). And, I personally think it is better not to win AI because the contract you have as a winner is so pathetic compared to other musicians and is so restrictive. Kelly Clarkson has soared into stardom and has a great album now that she isn't bound to AI anymore. Her first album was not as good, IMO.

Can you tell I feel strongly about this? ;)
