If Catholics do not see a threat to their faith in "The Da Vinci Code," the Rev. John Riccardo says that they may not know what they truly believe.
Let me point out that I, personally, have not read this book. I haven't seen the movie. However, I am not fully opposed to reading this book of fiction. Why? I see it as a way to prepare a defense. Apologetics. Just as we learn what other religions/denominations believe, and what those same ones argue that the Church does "wrong". By learning what they see as wrong with the Catholic Church, we are able to prepare the truth for them and defend our faith.
The DaVinci Code is no different, in my opinion.
It is unfortunate that many people are too shaky in their faith life to know the difference between the TRUTH and what this fictional work of literature presents. I don't feel it would be a threat to my faith, per se. I feel it would be enlightening in that it portrays what some may believe and say about our faith.
I will probably read the book one day. Right now it's not a priority. That's just the book. I have no intention of supporting Hollywood right now by seeing the movie. (I'd rather see the new X-Men...)
Fr. Riccardo again says it well, "How am I entertained by something that tells me my faith is a lie?"

I did read the book and it did help me strengthen my faith. Of course I also started the book fully aware that it was going to be slanderous to my religion and my intent to read it was the learn how to combat the heresy. But I made it a point to not support the offer by borrowing the book from a co-worker. I have no intention of supporting the movie.
I want to read the book so I can better defend my faith against it. I think it is shameful. It is never okay to propagate lies about your God, even if it is "entertainment" or "fiction."
If I had a son or daughter whose life was exploited...in other words, if a writer wanted to make up lies about my child, I would be offended. It is even worse when that child is Christ Himself.
