Hope in the Vote

House to Vote on Abortion Anesthesia Bill
"House leaders plan to bring up a bill tomorrow that would declare that fetuses feel pain and require abortion providers to offer pregnant patients anesthesia for their unborn child."

"At first blush, the Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act would seem to be anathema to abortion rights groups. It requires abortion providers to tell women whose pregnancies are 20 weeks past fertilization that "there is substantial evidence" that the fetus will feel pain during the procedure, a point that is hotly debated among physicians and pain specialists."

The article, of course, mentions that some abortion activists groups have trouble with the wording of the bill. Some in these groups have issues with the statement that a fetus can feel pain.

I ask this: how can they have an issue with such a fact? Medical tests and other knowledge prove that a fetus can feel pain. Especially with recent technological developments, such as those 3D ultrasounds! We have even been able to witness a fetus crying in utero as a response to situations.
These activists and their wording issues....I don't know how to word it in a somewhat decent manner. You can't deny truth!

You don't have to read very far into medical journals to come across these facts. We are lucky today to have increasing research on fetal pain (though for the most part it is to counter the increasing abortion rate).
Fetal pain as early as 8 weeks: By this age the neuro-anatomic structures are present. What is needed is (1)a sensory nerve to feel the pain and send a message to (2) the thalamus, a part of the base of the brain, and (3) motor nerves that send a message to that area. These are present at 8 weeks. The pain impulse goes to the thalamus. It sends a signal down the motor nerves to pull away from the hurt.

A more technical description would add that changes in heart rate and fetal movement also suggest that intrauterine manipulations are painful to the fetus. Volman & Pearson, "What the Fetus Feels".

I could quote more, but you get the idea. There's hope in the vote.

Oh goodness- sigh, if you have to give the "fetus" anethesia before you kill it, then doesn't that mean you shouldn't kill it in the 1st place!?!?!

I share the same thought. I fear that if the world is like this NOW, then what will it be like for our children? I do have hope in bills passing, such as this one. I hope, too, that these women actually hear that the "fetus" can FEEL things. PAIN. Good things, too. I'd love to be able to sneak in abortion clinics and put up Adoption signs.
