Tip the mail carrier?

Do you tip your mail carrier during the holidays?

We never have before, but I think we will this year.
It's the first time living somewhere where the carrier is consistent and the same person each day.

He's super nice, too. For example, my mom sent me a package one day in a box.
The day it arrived it was pouring rain. Heavy, nasty rain.
Our mail carrier not only left it under the porch covering, but he also wrapped it in a plastic clear bag and put it under our mat! It was dry as could be. I was very impressed.

I later found out he's been doing this same route for 6 years. I think it's worth recognizing nice work, especially when it comes to things as importnat as your mail!

So do you tip your carrier? What is appropriate? I was thinking a small giftcard to Starbucks or Panera or something.

That's a great gift idea- gift cards are the best, but probably anything will be appreciated! We don't usually tip, but I have thought about it... I was thinking of maybe some Bath & Body soaps or something for our mail lady...

We had the nicest carrier in MI. He was the same guy and when he saw my hubby in uniform, he started sharing about his son in Iraq. He was so nice, kind, and really kept up with us. I gave him some homemade fudge that I make every year.
A gift card would be great. I'm sure you know enough about them to know what they would like.
I'm not doing ours' this year. It's always someone new every few weeks. I may take out some fudge one day and whoever is there will get the treat!
Our newspaper lady left us a note with an envelope. I'm assuming it's for a tip. I've never seen her or anything so it's somewhat wierd.
Do you tip your newpaper lady?

Personally, I think that's a bit rude! I know people normally tip their newspaper person, but I've seen that only when the bill is being collected. For something like that to be expected kind of irks me. We don't have the paper delivered daily. I would include the tip with the regular bill, though.
The mail carrier I place in higher regard. :)

sorry, I meant to put this in quotes:

We used to "tip" our mail carrier years ago when we had a regular mail carrier. It seems like we get a new one every six months or so. We would usually pick up a small box of choclate candies or a small gift card to Wal-Mart to give to the mail carrier.

We also used to do the same for our garbage men. But, since I've been having "issues" with my garbage men for a number of years now, that has ceased.

Our newspaper person usually also leaves a little empty enveleope that says something like Happy Holidays with their name on it. I'm also assuming they want a tip. I don't like people "begging" for gifts. And while you're at it, can you try to put my newspaper in the newspaper "mailbox" that you provided instead of throwing it on the ground where it gets wet??? Thank you.

While working as a bank teller, many people would give me stuff for Christmas. The bank's policy was that it was up to the teller if they wanted to accept any gifts. My personal policy was to accept small things like baked goods. But I would not take cash from any clients. I would politely refuse and wish them a Merry Christmas. It was my job to be their friendly banker and take care of their money for them but I didn't feel right taking cash for doing my job. Besides, the bank made sure to give me a VERY NICE bonus each year.

Good for you! I think that's how it should be. I get easily annoyed when out and about and the employees palce their styrofoam cup out w/ "tips" written on it. In my opinion, if it's a job that earns a tip, the customer would know. And/or the receipt would have a tip option. (unlike at most coffee places, etc)

I delivered newspapers for many years and Christmas was always great for tips. I did a 200 customer route for 3 years straight and by that third year I made out quite well! It was very common to get a card from a customer with a nice $10 or $20 in it! Although, I like to think I provided great service to my customers and I never expected a tip, even though a newspaper carrier is a tip expected position. If I got an envelope expecting a tip I would be a bit turned off and possibly wouldn’t tip simply because I think it is very rude to assume you deserve one.
