A Plus to the Period?

Scientists Say Menstrual Blood Can Repair Hearts
Scientists obtained menstrual blood from nine women and cultivated it for about a month, focusing on a kind of cell that can act like stem cells.

Some 20 percent of the cells began beating spontaneously about three days after being put together in vitro with cells from the hearts of rats. The cells from menstrual blood eventually formed sheet-like heart-muscle tissue.

The success rate is 100 times higher than the 0.2-0.3 percent for stem cells taken from human bone marrow...

100 times higher. Incredible.

I sure don't enjoy my period, but it's kind of cool to think God designed it with more than one purpose in mind. To think that menstrual blood could be reserved as a safety net for your future self, or your gene pool later on down the road. I find it to be very intriguing.

(On a side note, this makes me think about women on forms of birth control which put a halt to their periods, limiting them to 4 times a year, or even worse, "freeing" them of their periods altogether. If, in the grand scheme of things, our own cycles could serve as medical miracle-workers, I will definitely be able to look at menstrual discomforts in a different light. I dare to say I'd maybe even be grateful I didn't prevent my body from going though the natural cycles it was meant to sustain.)

That interesting Sharon. I'm glad you took the time to post it.

Oh the same note but a bit different - I think it's sick how their are pills out their to limit your period, or stop it all together. I heard of a case where someone went on that and their mood changed severely - like they were bi-polar from the hormones. Right there tells me why would you ever want to put that in your body? Seriously - I'm just dumb strucken with why ANYONE would want to take the pill for so many reasons. =) Great post.

ok, but how many of you have had your period since the age of 9?

That stinks Sue -- I was a late bloomer but I still absolutely do not think you should be on the pill.

I saw this on the news, very interesting!

(And I started my period 2 days after my 10th birthday and I have horrible, abnormally heavy periods, and still won't use HBC! I used it for years before we converted to the Church and I tried many kinds and they all affected me negatively).

I came across your blog and we have a lot of common interests, so you'll probably being seeing me around your comments :)

Andrea, I'm not about to share my choice of birth control, but I will say this about the pill. When I was younger,I danced 4-5 days a week. In addition to having HEAVY periods, I was also burdened with getting my period TWICE a month. The family doctor (whom my parents trusted) said I needed to go on the pill for at least 3-6 months to regulate & lighten up my periods. My father reluctantly agreed and roughly 45 days later I was dancing without the worry of bleeding through my leotard. I now have a daughter who is 9 & I pray everyday she does not get her period at such a young age. I would never want her on the pill & I would first try more safe, natural ways for her but I am very thankful for it. There are side effects with so many things that it is mind numbing. My kids also have asthma & I hate that they have been on so many steroids but I also know it has helped them breathe. I do not have one regret for what the pill did for me.
