Presents or Presence?

So often now we're hearing about how commercialism has taken over Christmas, and how we've forgotten what Christmas is really about.
I can see a lot of truth to that.

When I reflect upon my favorite Christmas memories and traditions, what comes to mind is not the presents I received, but rather the people with whom I celebrated.
Sure, getting that My Little Pony castle when I was 6 was spectacular, and I'm excited about our new set of pots and pans this year. But those are not my most memorable times.

Think back to your own favorites. What comes to mind?
It is the PRESENCE of certain people and traditions, both religious and non-religious.

Remember that cool castle I told you about? I loved it, but what I loved more was sitting on the kitchen counter and helping my mother make cookies and fudge. I always thought I was so sneaky, pulling off the challenge of eating raw cookie dough! LOL. You know darn well she saw me.

I also loved the days when my entire family would get together- all 8 of us siblings and respective in-laws- and we'd sing songs together. My father would play his accordion, and my sister-in-law would plat the guitar. We ALL would sing out of tune. But it didn't matter. We had a great time. All gathered together and just being around each other.

And of course there's going to Christmas Eve Mass together. My family alone would take up over 2 entire pews. We'd send a crew over extra early so we could all sit together and worship the Lord.
I'd try to follow along with the hymns in the book. Glancing over at my mother and seeing tears in her eyes from enjoyment- that's worth more than any gift.

We outgrow the presents from the stores, or our styles/tastes change. We enjoy those things, but they are so temporary. But our families and loved ones will always be a part of us. And as long as we allow it, so will Christ.
The Presence is so much more meaningful and important than all of those nicely wrapped presents.
Having God apart of our lives, and the loving families HE gave us, those are the greatest gifts of all. HE sure knows how to take care of us.
Wouldn't it be even greater if we thanked HIM, even taking just a few minutes to spend in HIS presence? (Adoration...)

Thanks for letting me share with you all.
I hope you can all see and enjoy your true presents this Christmas!
