It's About Time

4-year limit on welfare wins approval (Michigan)

I never had much of an opinion on this issue, until I worked at CVS. I worked there p/t as a cashier after my son was born. CVS accepts WIC and foodstamps. I was shocked at the abuse within the welfare system.
Welfare is not intended to make people comfortable in their situation! It is intended to help those people get by until their situation is better (which they should be actively working on to improve). While employed with CVS, I saw so many customers come in using their foodstamps, only to watch them leave the store and get into their Excursion with brand new shiny rims on their wheels! There is something wrong with that picture. It's abuse and it's not right.

I am fully in favor of welfare being available to people who truly need it. Those people should be reviewed periodically so abuse is limited. It is unfortunate how many abuse the system. Unfortunate and embarrassing for our country.
I am delighted to finally see Michigan revising their welfare regulations.

What rankled me yesterday was seeing in the Wall Street Journal, people who receive welfare being described as "clients." Isn't a client one who pays for a service?
The whole idea of getting something for nothing is never a good one. Find a way to bring meaningful work into it.

If it had been being used correctly in the first place there never would have had to have been a Welfare to work program. Imagine, having to make a law telling people on government aid to start working so as not to stay on government aid and it being contraversial? I know, I am going to lend you money, and when you make no efford to pay me back, I suggest you try and do so, I am then the bad guy?

Ugh!

I was behind a woman the other day in the checkout lane that was using her food stamps card to purchase two candy bars.

I am all for giving people a helping hand when they NEED it, but the list of items that should be allowed needs to be drastically reduced.

I know that if I were in that position, I would spend that money that was GIVEN to me as efficiently as possible to ensure that there was food on my family's table. But, then again, that is probably why I don't have to DEPEND on welfare

My mother was offered WIC when I was born. It was offered to all new mothers in military families. My mother was very aprehensive about accepting it, but realized that it was a great help--especially when my dad was out to sea on a submarine for three months at a time with no contact. When my sister was born a number of years later, my mother decided to decline the WIC assistance since my family was in a better position financially.

While working as a cashier at a grocery store when in high school, I started to notice some of the things that people were buying and was quite surprised. Then they would walk over to the lottery cashier and buy obscene amounts of lottery tickets and cigarettes!!! Where is the oversight?!?!

Of course there were many very nice people and I'm sure the vast majority of people using the food stamps were justified. But there are MANY people out there that know how to work the "system". This needs to stop.

I am a big supporter of a time limit on welfare benefits in addition to strict welfare reform.

That's what I witnessed, too. It's terrible! and the candy bar thing...there technically IS a list of things not covered. However, in the case of my manager, if the person caused a big enough scene, they'd just excuse it anyway and take a financial loss! All to avoid a scene, allowing the abuse to continue, and lengthening the erroneous cycle.
If we were offered WIC ater this baby arrives, I'd bew inclined to accept it due to financial hardhips. However, I don't feel proud to admit that. I feel the minute things have improved for us, I remve myself from the list. I KNOW there are others out there who need it more than myself.
As you can tell, this is a topic I easily get worked up about.
