Flu Shot Season

It's a controversial topic. I've learned that the hard way.
I respect people who choose to get the flu shot. I truly do. At the same time, I would hope people could respect our decision to not get the flu shot, for us or our children.
I've posted before on what is in the vaccine here.

I'm not necessarily trying to persuade a person to not get the flu shot. What I am trying to do is get people to educate themselves before they vaccinate.
In trying to achieve that, I am linking to this interesting video clip and article by Dr. Mercola.
I couldn't find a way to post the video here, but it's definitely worth checking out.

I'd also like to share this from the link:
One credible hypothesis that explains the seasonal nature of flu is that influenza is a vitamin D deficiency disease.

Vitamin D levels in your blood fall to their lowest point during flu seasons. Unable to be protected by the body’s own antibiotics (antimicrobial peptides) that are released by vitamin D, a person with a low vitamin D blood level is more vulnerable to contracting colds, influenza, and other respiratory infections.

He adds in his comments section:

I have not received a flu shot nor had the flu in over 20 years. Here are the other “secrets” I use to keep the flu (and other illnesses) at bay:

Again, I'm not trying to start any debate or war here. To each his own. I'm just trying to help offer information so each person can make an educated decision.

I have never had a flu shot, neither have my boys. I honestly don't think I've ever really had the flu. I've had bad colds, bronchitis, even a stomach"flu" but not true influenza. My boys haven't either, only croup once each and colds. Even with Ethan having a heart defect none of his pediatricians have ever even brought it up!

You KNOW I'm all about this post! Its right up my alley in just about every way! I still have that "Should we, shouldn't we?" question pop into my head at the beginning of the flu season each year, but then I read a post like this that reminds me of all the time I spent researching this in previous years and i come to the same conclusion--For US, the benefit doesn't seem to outweigh the risk, you know? For some people, it does. Having an autoimmune disease makes me pause a little, but in he end, I just can't bring myself to do it.

I wanted to comment on the Vitamin D deficiency thing--I was just diagnosed with this and I couldn't believe it--I spend pretty muc all day every day outside--It really hocked me! The lowest level you're supposed to reach before you hit disease status is 32 (I think) and my level was at 21 (!!!)--I am now taking 6000 iu daily (have been for over a month). Vitamin D is sooooo crucial in your body--You should do a google search on Vit. D deficiency and just SEE what comes up--Its pretty scary!

One last thing: I have heard that the flu passes more easily in cold, dry weather, which is why it thrives in winter. It is advised to keep your house warm (flu is less likely to spread indoors b/c it can't live long in warm temps) and to use a humidifier (because flu can't stay afloat in heavy, dense air). Just a little tidbit I learned! :o)

This is a GREAT discussion for October--Thanks Sharon!!

Oh, PS: You should read "Eat Right for Your Type"--a book about eating habits for each blood type--That's some interesting stuff!

I appreciate your thoughts and links on this subject. I don't feel the need for this vaccine, but the company my husband works for is "making" all the employees get vaccinated. I think me and my boys will pass.

Someone just asked me today if I get the flu shot since I am a teacher and when I told them "no" they were appalled! The flu is already going around @ my school and the most of the teachers had/have it. Gah!
