What do you wish you could splurge on?

I don't mean that endless supply of chocolate (what? you don't wish for that?)
I know we all have a mental list of that dream house, or that one pair of shoes we keep holding off on.

I mean a big ticket item that you would wish for.

I have many, but today, I especially wish I had my own boat.
And not the type that can fit in my bathtub. ;)

My brother has a boat, and I think it is such a blast to go out on it.
I'm not fond of swimming in lakes, but I love being on the boat. I love going for the boat rides.

So many people near us have a boat. I can quickly start daydreaming each time I see one. Several people on our street have their own boat...heck, our neighbors have one. I see it, and I start dreaming. I'm out there, on the water, nice music playing (Jimmy Buffet, or the Pina Colada Song), I have Pat with me, Aidan, Brennan, some of their friends...we stay out for the day, going home in time to grill out some juicy hamburgers. That's my daydream. Oh, and I'd be stretch-mark & cellulite-free in my swimsuit. :) (it's a dream...I can dream it)

One day we may just buy a boat of our own. Not a huge boat, but one big enough for a couple of people.
I'm wishing to splurge on that right now.

How about you? If you chose one big ticket item to splurge on today, what would it be?

The Cure for Bordeom (re: blog quiz)

How Do You Really Feel About Your Family?

When taking this quiz, I had in mind my immediate family growing up, not me, Pat, and our boys.

You Feel Inadequate Around Someone in Your Family

You are very quick to forgive your family for wrongdoings. You don't expect them to be perfect, and you try to help them out whenever it's possible.

You feel like your family is prone to too many arguments and instability. You never feel like things can be completely peaceful.

You feel envious toward someone in your family. You can't help but be jealous of some one's success or popularity.

You tend to be the rock in your family. You support everyone in their times of need, and they take your advice seriously.

Hmmm....
I especially agree with the 2nd paragraph. I agree with the 1st one, too.
Envious towards someone? Sure. There are 7 other kids besides myself. I'd say I'm envious of at least 2 for different reasons.

Last paragraph: me a rock? Not sure I agree, but I do hope to be there for my family when they need someone. Not always easy considering I live out-of-state from them.
I don't think I'm one for advice or to be listened to, but who knows.

What about you?
Take the quiz and let good ol' Blogthings read into your soul. ;) Ha!

Ten on Tuesday

This week's topic: 10 Things You Didn't Like About School
While I usually enjoyed school, there were, of course, things I did not enjoy. I'm including all grades here.1. Getting up early.
2. School food. Cafeteria food is just nasty, and mostly unhealthy, too. The college "caf" was the worst!
3. Weekend homework. Weekends are for relaxing and taking a break. No homework!
4. Having to ask permission to go to the bathroom.
5. Speech class. I always got so nervous and hated people watching me give a speech!
6. P.E. I was never very athletic/sports-minded. I was in shape from dancing, but when it came time for sports, I felt so stupid.

7. Quiet hours in the dorm. I thought starting at 11:00 p.m. was a little too early for college.
8. EXAM HOURS in the dorm. Even worse. You couldn't even sneeze without an RA saying something.
9. Going to an out-of-state college, most of my friends lived far away from my home. I hated that. I missed my friends every break!
10.
Cliques. Always have, probably always will hate the cliques. High school was the worst, but college offered its share, too.

10 on Tuesday provided by Ten on Tuesday blog.

I'm Kristi Yamaguchi

Hmm. Can't say I fully agree, but I'd like to think that I could give it my all the way she did.
After all, next to my family & chocolate, there is no other love for me than dancing!

Weekend Fun

Shopping, boating, & games, oh my!
That sums up our weekend. We had a nice time enjoying our last "free" weekend before Patrick starts his classes.Saturday we headed about two hours north to my oldest brother's house. He and my sister-in-law have a boat with a private neighborhood lake. It's a nice clean beach, and always offers a great time. Not to mention Joe & Tina are always a blast; they are forever young at heart.

It had been two years since we were on their boat. Way too long! In fact, it has been about a year & a half since visiting them at their home- the last visit was when I was still pregnant with Brennan, the weekend I went into the hospital for 5 days with kidney stones. (oh how much fun that was). It was nice to be able to visit them in their neck of the woods for a change.

We arrived Saturday afternoon with gorgeous weather. Picture perfect. We didn't delay in getting on the boat.
Aidan was comfortable immediately; Brennan, not so much. In fact, he freaked out and screamed until we started playing You Can't Touch This by M.C. Hammer. (thanks to Kyle & his i-pod!) That was enough to soothe Brennan to sleep. First time on a boat, and he still falls asleep to M.C. Hammer. Okay....

Patrick had a great time beating himself up tubing. He alternated turns with Kyle, Joe & Tina. I've never gone tubing myself, but I always enjoy watching them try to get the other one off the float first.Aidan didn't actually swim in the lake, but he went out briefly on the float while we were idle. He felt like such a big kid-being in his own float. (notice Pat has beer with him;)
After being out there for a few hours ourselves, we went back to the beach and found my 3rd oldest brother waiting with his family. Aidan was so excited to see Michelle!
Pat and I took advantage of my sisters-in-law watching Aidan & Brennan, and we went back on the bat with Joe, Randy, Sarah, and Ryan and Michelle. More tubing and boating made for a great time out in the sun.
After the beach we went to Joe & Tina's house. The kids were settled and playing nicely, so the "grown ups" played some games: Oh Hell, Taboo, and Catch Phrase. Lots of fun! I especially enjoyed it, having been raised in quite the competitive family. I was amused when my nephew (Kyle) decided everyone should target me when I was winning in Oh Hell. I guess it sort of worked, since I lost. (Pat won)

Taboo always has been & always will be a favorite of mine. We played girls against boys, with the girls winning, of course. ;)

I wish we could see everyone more often! It was a great time and nice break from the usual weekends at home.

I hope you had a great weekend, too!
Oh, and I'll be making a post soon about my amazing shopping find for the boys. :)

Frankie Says RELAX

At least today, since it's National Relaxation Day.
Yes, you read that correctly: August 15th is National Relaxation Day. I find it to be quite fitting that it falls on a Friday this year. ;) Easier to relax on the start of the weekend, right?
I relaxed plenty before having kids. Now it's not so easy, but I will find a way to relax with the kids today. After all, it's good for you.
"Did you know that it is not only fun to relax but it's actually vital to a healthy lifestyle? Life is stressful! Have you seen the news lately? There are always so many things to do and never enough hours in the day. We prioritize and compartmentalize and organize and we try to squeeze each and every minute of the day to its fullest. Are you penciling "Rest Time" in your day planner? Our bodies and our minds need time to rest, to recover from a day's events and recuperate so we can feel energized and ready to begin a new day. While those workaholics among us may see it as slacking off, it's actually a great way to be more productive. When you take a reasonable amount of time for rest and relaxation, you can come back with more gusto and oomph (I only say words like "oomph" at 2 am). When you push yourself too hard, you become burnt out and sluggish and you will not be as productive. So sit back and relax and take some time to honor National Relaxation Day."
I'm sold! I'll honor away. Hmm...maybe I'll skip out on the laundry and dishes today. Heck, I'll even skip shaving in the shower!

Or does that make me a failure?
The irony is that today is also National Failures Day.
Seriously.
They fall on the same day. (who designates these holidays, anyway?)
Coincidence? I think not.
I prefer the point-of-view from this article, though:
"Failures are often about perception as well. A failure to one person may look different in the eyes of another."
Certainly true. Some think I failed because I got married at 23. Others think I failed because I stay home with my kids. I think I failed with Weight Watchers because I've been gaining weight.
Reading on:
"Was there times that what you thought was a failure turned out to be a blessing in disguise? Has someone ever accused you of being a failure and it motivated you to prove them wrong? In what ways have the failures of others affected your life? When you look at your failures, have you learned from them? If given the chance to do it all over again, would you change anything?"
Yes sir & ma'am. In areas I felt I've failed, I've learned I actually succeeded. And in ways others think I failed, I feel I came out a winner. It all boils down to finding the good in the bad, or the benefit from a challenge.

So today, on National Relaxation Day & National Failures Day, I'm honoring the holidays. ;)
How about you?

A Letter to Myself at 18

I've seen this on a few blogs now ( h/t: Rocks In My Dryer), and I got to thinking about what I'd say to myself if I could have done so. I couldn't resist entertaining this thought, following the lead of some fellow bloggers.

I present to you, with some vulnerability, a letter to myself at 18:

Dear 18 year old Sharon,

Right now life seems so complicated.
Right now you are angry and sad, and you feel like a coward.

Stop beating yourself up.

I promise you, this is what is meant to happen, and the effects of this will mean a happy life in your future.
Your near future.

Sharon, would
you believe me when I tell you that in just 5 years, you will be a confident, happy woman? You will know yourself, and you will have made your own little space in this world. You'll be walking down the aisle for your own wedding in 5 years. Would you believe that soon after that, you'll be welcoming your first child into this world?

At 18, life is hectic. You just graduated high school, and
you're going to a college you don't know you want to attend, feeling "forced" to go there. You're moving away from family & friends you think you can't live without. Even more so, you're moving away from a boyfriend you've considered the love of your life.

Well thank goodness 18 is young! There is a much better person out there to be the love of your life. Go with what your instincts are telling you-kick him to the curb! Enjoy the freedom.

These are the years to do so.
So much excitement awaits you. Establishing new friendships, ones so deep that these people will become family to you. You will travel and see the world. Sharon, you will make one of your dreams come true-you will go to Ireland in just one year from now!

You will grow closer to family back home, but in a more mature way.
You'll cross over from having just a parent-child relationship with your parents. You'll come to see them as actual people, and in return, they'll come to see you as an independent woman, not just their baby girl. (Switzerland, October 1999...just wait)

Best of all, you will come to know who you really are.
You will learn that in life, having a small group of good friends far outweighs a large group of people you half know.

You will learn that drinking is nice and fun, but partying isn't too much your thing.
You will learn that being a size 6 is
not fat. In fact, enjoy it now, because you'll also soon learn how much of a challenge it can be to stay a size 6.

You will learn that you are a good teacher, and you did
not take the easy way out. You will experience living on your own, being a full-fledged adult. And you know what? You'll be good at it. Your students and their parents will love, compliment you, and even express sadness when you announce you won't be coming back.
You'll learn that raising your own kid is far better than teaching other parents' kids. You'll also learn that even your own kid can get on your nerves.

Stop worrying about life at 18. High school is over with, and high school is not the best 4 years of life. That's college, honey. College will be better than you expect, and you will be just fine.
It will turn out well.

In fact, just wait until you look back & see your husband and two little boys. When you enjoy being together as much as you do, you'll know it was all worth it. You'll find the value of being home with your family, knowing that your education is not being wasted, but rather, you're applying it to every day life. You'll know that should you choose to go back to work one day, you chose the perfect career to do so.

Lastly, you will learn that what you gain in college is not just about the degree and papers to prove it. What you will gain is life experiences that teach you who you are, what you really want in life. Your college experience, Sharon, will introduce you to the people that will forever remain a part of your life. People that make you a better person. People whom you make feel complete. Be happy. Be excited. At 18, life is just beginning.

Love,
You at age 28, August 13, 2008

P.S.
For goodness sakes, enjoy the stylish clothes and fun shopping while you can! Soon enough you'll find that money is better off in other places. And SLEEP. Dear child, sleep as if you could store it up. Right now you think 8 a.m. is getting up early. Ha! In a few years, 8 a.m. will feel like sleeping in. So enjoy it all now. Life does get better, but in different ways. This is the time to sleep in and enjoy spending your money on yourself. ;)

If you wrote a letter to yourself at 18, what would you say?

Final Tee-Ball Game!

It's hard to believe Aidan's tee-ball season is over & done with already!
This was his first official sports experience, and it was a good one. We truly live in a great town with an equally great community.
His coaches were patient and good with all the kids, and he always had a good time.
True, he continued to spend more time in the outfield playing in the dirt, but hey, he had fun, and that is what we cared about most. He did still learn the basics of the game. Each time he put on his tee-ball uniform, he was just beaming. Adorable.

We were all so pleasantly surprised by this one & only evening game. Being the last game, they made a big deal out of it. They had all players line up, they announced their names over the PA, and then they sang The National Anthem! No joke. It was so stinking cute.
One of the high school girl employees actually sang the National Anthem through the microphone. I know it was only tee-ball for 4-year-olds, but I still got goosebumps and choked up.
Of course, being 4-year-olds, the players really had no clue as to what was going on.

The game was played, and they announced every player at bat. In between plays they even did song tidbits...just like at a real game. The kids were oblivious to it all; the parents all chuckling.
At the end of the game they did the "Good Game" hand fives, then again to our surprise, they each received a trophy and certificate! The look on Aidan's face was just priceless. He was so proud and happy, and his smile couldn't have been bigger. His trophy is proudly displayed in his room now. (The night he received it, he slept with it)

The final game was made even more special by having Pat's parents & niece come down for it. (Mercy came with pom-poms to cheer...too cute!) We all went out after for ice cream to celebrate. It was a pretty good time. (Despite Brennan being sick and Aidan getting sick.)

Without further ado, the pictures!
Announcing the players; Aidan is farthest on the right.
Aidan at bat; he was nervous to go it alone, so Pat went with him.
The team getting ready to do the "Good Game" thing
Just received this trophy and certificate

Ta-da!
The trophy up close. Aidan thinks it's the coolest thing. It will be one of his first show&tells for preschool
Aidan and his cousin, Mercy (isn't she pretty?)
The paternal grandparents with Aidan and Mercy
Family shot. We all wore green since he was on the green team.
Celebratory ice cream cone (with sprinkles, of course)

Back from Vacation, Part 2: (LONG post)

Normally when I think "Michigan", I think of Detroit and the
crazy metropolitan area. Busy roads full of potholes, mini mall after mini mall, and excessive signs for donuts, pop, and lotto.

It felt like an entirely different state up north.
It's calm. Slower. Smoother. Prettier. Nicer. Friendlier.
It's a place I grew very fond of last week, and no blog post can accurately describe how nice of a trip it was for us.

Let me start with the drive up.
We made decent timing. We left around 8-something Wednesday morning, and got to the cabin around 4:15. That included 2 bathroom stops and an hour-long lunch break. Not bad for traveling with 2 kids.

After lunch Aidan fell asleep in the car (good boy). Brennan did not appreciate that, seeing as Aidan was Brennan's entertainment. He cracked me up. He insisted on bugging Aidan and trying to wake him. It was hilarious. That determined little toddler was doing everything in his reach to pester Aidan (literally).
Once I completed my obligation of snatching the picture of little brother aggravating big brother, I had the audacity to make Brennan stop so Aidan could stay asleep.
The result? A tantrum with crying. (like I'm the only parent that takes pictures of my kids crying...)

Other than Brennan entertaining us, we were amused by several other things along the drive:
-"Bears crossing" sign. Oh yeah. For real. We drove through a National Forest and saw a few "Bears Crossing" signs.
-Intelligent signs that read "Do not pass when opposing traffic present". Gee, thanks. Good to know.
-Oh, and Brennan gagging himself. He's discovered he can stick his fingers down his throat & cause a weird feeling, & even stranger sound. You look at him and he just looks pitiful, gagging himself, red in the face, eyes watering. Yet when I pull his fingers out, he gets mad. Then sticks them right back in. Sure enough he made himself throw up a little in the car.

By the time we got there we were all ready to get out of the car.
The remainder of Wednesday we enjoyed just being at the cabin and visiting with Patrick's grandparents. They grilled out an awesome steak dinner for us, we watched the sunset over Lake Michigan, and did not miss the plug-ins. (yup, we were "unplugged"...no TV, Internet, or cell phone reception).

Thursday morning started off so nicely. It was so cool we needed jackets. Aidan wore his new hoodie, and he transformed into Lightning McQueen. He was pretending the fence was his racetrack, and spent about an hour zooming around.
After Brennan's nap we went into town and hit the beach. The boys were apprehensive of the lake at first, but once Aidan saw other kids, he was well on his way (with his Lightning McQueen shovel, of course).

This beach was perfect. The water temperature was relaxing, and this beach stayed shallow for a decent stretch. I didn't have to worry about Aidan getting in over his head at all. I loved that beach. They swam, played in the sand, watched the boats, and then we finished it off by walking through the town and getting some Super Man ice cream.

These boys were exhausted by the time we got home. They slept well that night.

Friday we headed into Leland, aka Fishtown. This is one of my favorite places.
They each picked out their souvenirs here, we ate a nice lunch, bought post cards, etc. It's a gorgeous little scenic town. So many boats, The Dam Candy Store, the smell of fudge...what's not to love?

For dinner that night we were invited to join Pat's grandparents & parents at Knot Just a Bar restaurant, which is overlooking Lake Michigan.
On the way there we drove past this super tiny airport, and sure enough, we were able to watch a real small plane land! The boys thought that was so cool (and it was). After the restaurant we made another stop at Peterson Park. We made it just before the rain poured down. This was not really a swimming beach, but it sure was a great one for throwing rocks.

I just couldn't stop smiling watching Aidan throw rocks into the lake.
His world was perfect at that moment. He had his daddy & mommy there, baby brother; he was outside in the fresh, cool air, facing Lake Michigan and throwing rocks. No other cares. No traffic to hear. No phone ringing. No TV to tempt us.
I suppose it was perfect at that moment for all of us.

Saturday was the day of the family reunion. It was for Pat's grandmother's immediate family. She is one of 9 children. This was huge. There were over 100 people there!
I have to add a quick side note about her family: Pat's grandma is a twin. She & her twin brother are the oldest. Her mother had another set of twins following this set of twins.Crazy! Two sets of twins in a row. Can you imagine? 4 kids under 3?!

We didn't stay at the reunion very long. It was not a very easy place with two little ones.
We headed into Traverse City-downtown. I tell you, downtown TC is much nicer than expected! Decent size, plenty of shops & restaurants...it was fun.

The first thing we did was ride on a train. There was a nice park at the Marina, and an old zoo train went all through it. Aidan & Brennan could not have been happier. It just gave me goosebumps.

We walked through downtown and ate dinner at Pangea's pizza place. It was some of the best pizza I have ever had. Yum! Following dinner we walked off some of our gut, hitting a few shops. I got a great deal on a fall jacket/raincoat for Aidan (picture to come tomorrow), as well as a hoodie for me. :)

Sunday left no time other than for packing. We packed up and bid a sad farewell to the cabin.
We drove back into TC and went to Mass (at the church where Pat was Baptized, actually), then had lunch with Pat's parents. The drive home took much longer. The boys were crabby and did not sleep as we expected. Plus we were all missing the cabin. Aidan has asked many times already if we can go back.

It was a great time. We all got some sun, and best of all, time away from all the business of our daily life. I really thought I'd miss the TV and computer, but I didn't. We visited with family and each other. It was so peaceful.

4th of July

How did you spend the 4th?

We had a nice day, just the four of us. My husband finally had a full day off again (it was nearly 4 weeks this time since a full day off), and we really just enjoyed staying around our area, enjoying time together as a family.

Because it rained on his birthday, we wound up doing something Pat has been wanting to do for a while now: go on this really nice, long bike path. It was his birthday plan, so I was in no position to say no. ;)

I was skeptical of going, for two main reasons:
1.) I had never done the bike w/ the baby seat, nor had Brennan ever been on a bike ride.
2.) I knew it would be a long ride.

It turned out to be a great time, though. Within 2 minutes I was comfortable biking with Brennan, and he loved it. I had him on the bike with me, and Pat had Aidan in the trailer on his bike.

The weather was perfect. It was actually cool enough for the boys to need long sleeves. The path was so scenic and shaded. All in all, we biked roughly 11 miles. That may be normal for some people, but not me! My bum was sore from the seat. (still is)

Here is some of the scenery we saw on our bike ride: (notice Brennan fell asleep)
After the bike ride, we hit Subway and took the lunch with us to a nearby park, making it a picnic lunch. Aidan thought that was cool. The boys loved playing, acting like they hadn't just been outside for over two hours.

We headed home, assuming our exhausted little men would take decent naps. Ha! Brennan did, but Aidan never fell asleep. (I know. Crazy) At least he settled down and played quietly.

Next we ran to the store to get some things, fed the boys dinner, then sent them off to dreamland.

Fighting our tiredness, Pat and I watched I Am Legend. The movie was different than I expected, but pretty good. (I didn't realize it was another zombie-type movie). We enjoyed it, but I didn't think it was as good as others said. (For the zombie movies, I still think 28 Days Later was best). Will Smith is a great actor, though. And I might add, some decent eye candy, too.

That was our 4th in a nutshell. Last year we went to our first Mud Hens game, and I got a cute picture of the boys together. I'm ending with a comparison. Can you believe how much a year changes kids?

Hope you had a nice holiday as well!

I've Got the Boogie Fever

Apparently.
Why can't I take just one of these darn quizzes? Sheesh.

You Are Disco Dancing

You are very energetic and lively. You could dance all night.

Fun loving and social, you like dancing best when everyone in the room is dancing.

You love to dance to anything, and it's hard to stop once you start.

You love dancing in a crowd. And no matter how big the crowd, all eyes are usually on you.

I do love dancing along w/ others. Wedding receptions are always fun, parties, etc. Part of what I miss most from college is always having others to dance with. The days of living in the girls' dorms presented endless opportunities to dance like no one was watching (even though people were;).

Which dance are you?

The Fireworks Test

Hmmm...I can't say I fully agree, but who am I to knock the psychological truths behind these blogging quizzes? ;)

What Your These Fireworks Say About You

You are focused, single minded, and intense.

You don't let others see your intensity often, and when they do, they are quite surprised.

You burn brightly, but you also burn steadily.

You have the endurance to get the one thing you desire most.

Memorial Day, 2008

We had a really nice holiday, just staying around home the four of us (for a change). My husband has been working his butt off, so to have an entire day with him felt like a real treat for all of us. My only complaint is that it was very humid. And I don't do well in the heat & humidity.
We still enjoyed our local parade, though, as well as a trip to the park, cleaning out the sandbox, and daddy grilling out some bacon-wrapped fillets. Yum!

It wouldn't be a true Memorial Day post without mentioning our troops. God Bless them all, and we are so grateful for the sacrifices they make to keep our country a safe place. They are all amazing!

I hope you all had a nice Memorial Day! Here is our recap:
My guys getting their seats for the parade. Aidan insisted on sitting in the stroller.

The beginning of the parade: I love the guys in uniform & the flags
School band-Aidan & Brennan loved it!

I thought this was adorable. The boy scouts rode their bikes!
Old-fashioned cars
This was the Coca-Cola truck, a personal favorite ;)
This one was even playing the music from The Blues Brothers...pretty funny
The Shriners driving silly acting like they'd crash into each other. A good show.
Aidan's favorite part: the firetrucks are coming!
Later on at the park-Brennan loves the swings, even though he's not showing it here.
Aidan playing some soccer
And some basketballDaddy & Brennan playing on the slide

Brennan enjoying the park
Enjoy this last week of May!
